I get so angry when I think about the Mortgage Bill that President Bush signed this week. It actually makes my stomach churn when I hear about it!
Sean and I have struggles just like everyone else. We work hard so we can afford our home, and we don't get in over our heads. If we have to do without, we do without. I've seen houses I would love to have (being a Realtor I've seen a lot!), but the little voice in my head that I sometimes call 'reality' has always stopped me from doing something stupid.
Soooo... now the people who jumped on the mortgage sled as it passed by, the people who ignored the fact that taking a mortgage with a ballon payment might be stupid due to the index margin being what it can be, the people who decided to 'deal with it when it happens' are getting bailed out! What?
I can think of a hell of a lot of ways to use $300 billion dollars, and they don't including bailing people out of a tight spot that was completely in their making! How about backing community resources that help the people who are a true victim of their environment? Or, making healthcare available to those people who can't afford it because they're working for minimum wage? Even Bush's "threat" of vetoing the bill and, instead, provide $3.9bn in neighborhood grants that would help neighborhood governments buy and rehabilititate foreclosed homes would be better than giving people another insured loan!
I voted for Bush. I have been an advocate in his Presidency and have always tried to view both sides of the coin when an issue arrises, but this one really pisses me off. I do feel badly for the people who have found themselves about to lose their homes, but on the larger scale of national issues this is one that I think should be left between the banks and the borrowers. America is full of "I want it and I want it now no matter what!" and it's about time people are forced to realize that you have to take personal responsibility! If the banks get involved and cover a bad risk? Oh well. Credit card companies and the like are just as much to blame as the individuals themselves by offering credit to people on a bascially 'sight unseen' basis!
Ugh. Vent over.
